Do you know what ILL is? (Interlibrary Loan)

The Library world, like other specialities, has its own acronyms and ILL sounds strange – but it stands for Interlibrary Loan. It is the process of requesting from other libraries books and journal articles which Maine Medical Center Library does not own.

Right now you can go to the Library’s page and under Clinical Resources, click on Journals. This brings you to TDNet which is a listing of all journals the Library owns or has free access to.

So what do you do when we don’t have access to something? This is where the Interlibrary Loan process starts. You can give your journal or book request to our staff and we request it from another Library. We use an electronic system called Docline which tracks all the holdings of libraries across the United States and internationally. We can request that the articles come in paper or as pdf’s which we would forward on to you.

Libraries have a strong network, and we respond to each others’ requests quickly. Often we go out of state to such libraries as Harvard, University of Connecticut and the National Library of Medicine. We have even requested materials from the British Lending Library and the Chinese University of Hong Kong!

However, getting materials from other libraries does have a cost and we need to ask you for a cost center number to charge the request to your department. The library subsidizes the cost of interlibrary loan, but departments are billed $10 per request to help share the cost.

If you ever have a question about finding a book or journal article, please call the Library at 662-2202 or email us at library@mmc.org
